In brief

Inverter maintenance Growatt WIT The 4-15K-HU manual covers three areas: cleaning the enclosure and controlling humidity, operating the fans (always after disconnecting the power supply and waiting 5 minutes), and maintaining operating conditions—600mm clearance around the enclosure and 1000mm in front, away from direct sunlight. Below are step-by-step procedures and how neglect can lead to warranty exclusions.

An inverter doesn't have a maintenance schedule like a car - and that's why inverter maintenance Growatt It can be overlooked for years until it ends up derating on a hot summer day or triggering an overheating code. WIT 4-15K-HU (rev. 2025-11; editorial translation from the English edition) spreads maintenance requirements across three chapters: 9.1 (running maintenance), 5.1-5.2 (installation site conditions that determine the amount of maintenance), and 3.6 (stockpiling). We've compiled them into a single guide—with procedures, numbers, and an indication of which failures fall under which warranty exclusions.

Rule number one: power off and 5 minutes of rest

Both procedures in Chapter 9.1 begin with the same DANGER warning: Before any operation, disconnect the AC and DC power, and wait 5 minutes after shutting down the system. When working on the fans, the instructions specify the reason: the pause lasts "until the residual voltage is completely discharged"—intermediate capacitors hold a charge after the power sources are disconnected.ace on fans are reserved for qualified and trained electricians. This is no exaggeration: five minutes with a phone in hand costs less than one puncture. The second constant separation rule: cleaning the housing is accompanied by two periodic inspections: whether the ambient humidity is within the permissible range, whether the device is kept free of dust, and whether ventilation and heat dissipation are working properly. In other words: inverter maintenance Growatt it is more about monitoring the surroundings than the device itself - the casing can be wiped clean, but the dust and temperature around it decide everything.

Maintenance parameter Value from the manual
Pause after power off at least 5 minutes before touching the device
Cleaning the housing wipe off the dust, wipe with a damp cloth
Periodic inspections humidity in the range + no dust; ventilation and heat dissipation
Working temperature -30 ° C to + 60 ° C
Working humidity 0-95% RH
Cooling / tightness smart air cooling, IP66 housing

Inverter maintenance Growatt starts with drilling - spacing and mounting location

Inverter maintenance Growatt It starts with assembly - drawing of service intervals WIT 4-15K-HU: 600 mm on each side and 1000 mm at the front
Fig 5.2 - Mounting clearances around the inverter. Material: Growatt, instructions WIT 4-15K-HU, p. 17 of the print.

Most thermal problems don't arise during operation, but on the day of installation. The instructions require a minimum of 0,6 m of space around the device: 0.6 m on both sides, above and below the inverter, and 1 m in front—this allows for both air circulation and service access. Vertical installation or with a maximum rearward tilt of 15° is permissible; horizontal installation or with a forward tilt is not. The enclosure is IP66-rated and can be operated outdoors, but with an important caveat from section 5.2: despite the IP66 rating, the device should not be exposed to direct sunlight, rain, or snow, and the manufacturer "strongly recommends" a roof—with a clearance of at least 300 mm above the inverter and 1000 mm in front. Direct sunlight is a clearly described mechanism for power loss: excessive temperature leads to reduced efficiency.

With multiple inverters on a single wall, the spacing between units is also a minimum of 600 mm – a tight battery of inverters heats up each other, causing the fans to work harder than they need to. Practically speaking, if you're taking over a facility with an inverter wedged between pipes and a cabinet, consider moving it as the most cost-effective maintenance procedure – no amount of cleaning will compensate for the lack of 600 mm of ventilation. The list of space requirements also includes: non-flammable flooring, away from strong sources of interference, and out of reach of children.

Fans: When to Clean, How to Disassemble, and What to Use

Fan mounting plate position WIT 4-15K-HU and fan removal procedure with a Phillips screwdriver
Fig 9.1 and 9.2 - Removing the fan board. Material: Growatt, instructions WIT 4-15K-HU, p. 120 of the print.

Ventilation and heat dissipation are—according to the manual—essential to protect the inverter from degrading performance due to excess heat; the fan turns on when component temperatures rise. If something unusual happens (loud operation, overheating code, power drops on sunny days), the manual identifies three common causes: a foreign object blocking the fan or dust on the heatsink, a damaged fan that needs to be replaced, or a poorly ventilated mounting position.

The cleaning and replacement procedure is short: disconnect the DC and AC power with a five-minute pause, disassemble the fan mounting plate with a Phillips screwdriver (Fig. 9.1), disconnect the fan connector and remove it from the board, clean or replace it, and finally, secure the wires with a cable tie and reassemble in reverse order. The right tools for the right components are crucial – the manual clearly separates them: a pump/compressed air gun is for cleaning the heatsink, while the fan and its cover are cleaned with a brush or damp cloth, as the pressurized air stream can damage the fan – this is a separate WARNING. Disassembling the fan section does not require removing the top cover of the device – and removing the cover and breaking the seal voids the warranty.

How do you know it's time for this procedure before an error code appears? WIT-and this is "smart air cooling"—fans start when component temperatures get too high, so a healthy inverter runs quietly on a cool day. Two warning signs in practice: fans audible in the morning at moderate temperatures (the heat sink isn't dissipating heat—time for cleaning) and power drops on sunny afternoons with clean panels (the cooling system can't keep up). In both cases, the inverter requires maintenance. Growatt done right away is cheaper than replacing the fan after a season of operation on a clogged radiator - and the overheating codes (Warning 407, Error 408) are described in the article about error codes.

Inverter storage - stock in the warehouse and on the construction site

Section 3.6 applies to anyone who keeps inverters in storage for more than a few days. Rules: the device is left in its original packaging, in a dry and well-ventilated place; storage temperature from -40°C to +70°C and humidity 0-95% RH; stack a maximum of five units and never without packaging. After long storage, inspection and testing before installation must be performed by qualified personnel - and after more than a month of storage, the inverter may have incorrect time and date, which must be set before connecting to the grid. The procedure for setting the clock (password "growatt” + date) we described in the article about operating modes WIT.

Why this is important for warranty purposes: the exclusion list explicitly mentions damage resulting from storage in conditions inconsistent with the instructions. Inverters overwintering under plastic on the construction site—a classic November installation—falls squarely under this heading. If the construction schedule deviates, leave the devices in a warehouse or in a dry building owned by the investor, in boxes, stacked up to five pieces. When ordering from our warehouse under these conditions, min assembly, this problem disappears at the source - 24-hour shipping means that the inverters do not have to stay on site for a week.

Inverter maintenance Growatt in an annual rhythm - a proposal from practice

The manual says "periodically" and "regularly", it does not specify the intervals - the following rhythm is our practical recommendation for installation in Polish conditions, based on the activities in the manual:

When (practice) Action The basis in the manual What to pay attention to
spring, pre-season housing cleaning and dust control dust off with a damp cloth; dust control air inlets and outlets, spiderwebs behind the inverter
spring, pre-season fan and radiator control cleaning the cover, blades and radiator pump only for radiator; blades - brush or cloth
summer, in the heat shading and ambient temperature control no direct sun; -30÷+60°C; roofing recommended derating on sunny afternoons = a sign of a thermal problem
after storms and gales inspection of the roof and surroundings protection against rain and snow despite IP66 leaves and nests at air intakes; condition of protectors - see SPD codes in the error codes article
on every visit service interval control 600 mm around, 1000 mm in front items "added" by the user: boxes, bicycles, cabinets

Conclude each visit with an entry in the facility documentation: date, activities, before/after photos. Inverter maintenance Growatt documented with photos, it is also evidence in the event of a warranty dispute - exclusion no. 5 covers "improper maintenance", and the easiest way to refute such an accusation is with a protocol.

Winter, spring, heat – what happens to the inverter between inspections?

The operating temperature range of -30°C to +60°C covers Polish conditions with plenty of headroom, so winter itself doesn't require any maintenance—the frosty months are the inverter's lightest thermal workload. Spring brings problems: tree pollen and dust from the heating season settle on the radiator just as the days get longer and the device begins to operate at full capacity. Therefore, our maintenance schedule includes cleaning before the season, not after it—inverter maintenance. Growatt performed in April pays off throughout the summer, performed in October cleans the device before the months when not much happens anyway (recommendation from practice).

Hot weather, on the other hand, is the only time when the inverter truly "tells" whether maintenance is working: if there's no derating after spring cleaning on July afternoons, the cooling system and installation location are doing their job. If power drops return despite a clean radiator, the problem is the location: sun on the enclosure, lack of shelter, or built-up spaces. Then, inverter maintenance Growatt it stops being a matter of a cloth and becomes a decision about moving the device or adding a roof - and it's worth making it once, instead of cleaning the device every quarter, which heats up for architectural reasons.

What NOT to do during maintenance

Poorly performed inverter maintenance Growatt can do more harm than its absence - these four prohibitions come straight from the instructions:

  • Do not clean the fan with a pump or compressed air. The WARNING clearly states: airflow can damage the fan. The pump is for the radiator, the brush and cloth are for the fan.
  • Do not work on the device without a 5-minute break after disconnecting the power supply. The residual voltage discharges only after this time.
  • Do not remove the top cover “when” cleaning. Access to the fans is through the mounting plate, and removing the cover and breaking the seal is the first warranty exclusion.
  • Do not store inverters without packaging or in stacks higher than 5 pieces. Section 3.6 prohibits both practices, and storage damage is outside the warranty.

From the installer's practice

  • Inverter maintenance Growatt it sells best as a service along with panel cleaning - one visit, two reports, and the customer receives a complete "well-kept installation" (sales recommendation).
  • When inspecting, take the same three photos as during installation: the front with its surroundings, the air intakes, the seal - a year-on-year comparison series shows dustiness faster than any measurements.
  • Teach your customer one thing: 600mm around the inverter is a no-object zone – a sticker or tape on the garage floor works better than instructions.
  • Enter inspection dates into the same calendar as cleaning the customer's panels - inverter maintenance Growatt "by the way" is 100% feasible, a separate visit is postponed for years.
  • Plan your fan replacement with the spare part in hand – the procedure is short, but the inverter remains off while you wait for the part.

Maintenance FAQs

How often is inverter maintenance required? Growatt WIT 4-15K-HU?

The instructions don't specify an interval—they require "periodic" inspections of dust, humidity, and ventilation. Our practice for Polish conditions: a full cleaning before the spring season, plus a visual inspection after storms; in dusty locations (dirt roads, carpentry shops, hen houses) more frequently.

Can I clean the inverter with a pressure washer since it has IP66?

No. The instructions instruct you to clean the housing with a damp cloth, and despite the IP66 rating, it recommends protecting the device from rain and direct sunlight. The seal protects against weather conditions, not against pressurized water jets into the connectors.

Inverter reduces power on hot days - is this a fault?

Not necessarily. Excessive temperature leads to power reduction, and the manual lists three causes to check: a blocked fan or dusty heatsink, a damaged fan, and poor ventilation of the mounting location. Start with a visual inspection and cleaning, and only then consider servicing – in our experience, most summer power drops are caused by a dusty heatsink or an attached enclosure, not by an electronics fault.

Who can replace the fan?

Qualified and trained electrician only - Section 9.1.2 opens the DANGER warning with this caveat. The procedure requires disconnecting all power sources and a five-minute pause before commencing work.

Can I mount an IP66 inverter on a south wall without a roof?

Formally, IP66 allows for outdoor installation, but the instructions in section 5.2 clearly state: do not expose to direct sunlight, rain, or snow. To reduce derating and extend the device's lifespan, the manufacturer strongly recommends a roof with a minimum clearance of 300 mm above the device. A south-facing wall without a screen is a ready-made scenario for power reduction on any sunny day—if there's no other location, include a roof in your quote.

Step-by-step review checklist

  1. Disconnect AC and DC, wait at least 5 minutes.
  2. Inspection of the surroundings: spacing 600/1000 mm, shading, roof condition.
  3. Clean the housing with a damp cloth; check the air inlets.
  4. Fans: mounting plate with cross, radiator with pump, blades with brush.
  5. Reassemble in reverse order, fastening the wires with a cable tie.
  6. Start-up, diode check and entry into the documentation with photos - this is how inverter maintenance is documented Growatt closes the topic of exclusion no. 5 from the guarantee list.
