Growatt WiFi - Network Requirements, Hotspot Mode, and Connection Diagnostics

Data verified 2026-08-11 Each parameter with indicated source - list at the bottom of the article.

In brief

Growatt WiFi requires a 2,4 GHz network with WPA/WPA2 encryption—the 5 GHz band is not supported. Data flows every 5 minutes to the server.growatt.com via ports 5279/5280 (ShineWiFi-X/S) or 7006 (ShineWiLan-X2).

Most of the "monitoring not working" reports in installations with this brand of inverters are actually grid problems - Growatt WiFi has several strict requirements that a typical home router doesn't meet in its factory settings, and a corporate firewall can block it without a trace. This article covers only the network layer: router requirements, configuration modes, ports to unblock, and a diagnostic tree based on the LED. The full account creation and first login process is described in a separate article on logging into monitoring—here, we'll cover what happens between the data logger and the server.

What requirements must the network meet to Growatt WiFi worked?

Growatt WiFi only works in the 2,4 GHz band—the modules do not support 5 GHz networks. The router name and password can only contain numbers, letters, and English punctuation marks; symbols like ﹉… €¥ are not allowed. The network must be encrypted—the module supports WPA and WPA2—and hotspots with second-factor authentication via a website are not supported.

From the radio side ShineWiFi-X It transmits in the 802.11 b/g/n standards at 2,4–2,5 GHz frequencies with a power of up to +20 dBm. These are the parameters of a typical WiFi client—the module has no external antenna or the option to add one, so the link quality is determined solely by what's available at the inverter's installation site. Data flows to the server via TCP using the Modbus TCP protocol, in packets sent every 5 minutes—throughput is irrelevant; what matters is stability and port patency.

Wymaganie Value
Pasmo 2,4 GHz only (2,4-2,5 GHz)
Radio standards 802.11 b / g / n
encryption WPA/WPA2, the network must be encrypted
Characters in SSID and password numbers 0–9, letters, English punctuation; without ﹉…·€¥
authentication without the second stage (captive portal)
Server ports 5279 and 5280 (ShineWiFi-X/S); 7006 (ShineWiLan-X2)

Why these limitations? The module is a small embedded device, not a laptop: its network stack supports a single, simple network class and has no interface to display the hotspot login page or select a certificate. Therefore, the list of requirements in the table above is closed—the network either meets them or Growatt WiFi won't work, regardless of signal strength. The good news is that all these conditions can be verified in five minutes on the router's dashboard, before the module is even removed from the box.

Growatt WiFi Step by Step - Standard Mode and Hotspot Mode

Growatt WiFi - Configuration ShineWiFi-X/S in standard mode: In-app network wizard screens ShinePhone
Standard network configuration mode in ShinePhone. Material: Growatt, ShineWiFi-X/S Configuration Guide (202310), p. 1.

Network configuration is performed via the application ShinePhone In standard mode, the phone stays on the home network: the wizard guides you through router selection and password entry, and after successful configuration, returns you to the installation page. This is the default path when the router is within range and broadcasting a correctly configured 2,4 GHz network.

Hotspot mode is used for local configuration, directly on the module. The sequence: press the button on the datalogger—the LED will change to solid blue—then connect your phone to the WiFi network with the same name as the datalogger's serial number; the default password for this network is 12345678. In the local settings, you select the target router and enter its password. The manufacturer describes hotspot mode as debug mode, intended for professionals—in practice, it's the most reliable option for facilities with non-standard networks, as it eliminates the need for a router during configuration.

If the wizard detects outdated firmware, it will automatically update and restart the module, after which you will need to reconnect to the hotspot. ShineWiLan-X2 configured differently - via Bluetooth from the app, and a steady blue LED indicates Bluetooth mode, not hotspot. After changing the router or network password, the previously configured module ShineWiFi requires a factory reset (press and hold the button for more than 6 seconds until the LED flashes three colors) and reconfiguration.

Module network matrix Shine — ranges, ports, emergency roads

Growatt WiFi isn't a single module, but a family with different networking capabilities. The matrix summarizes connectivity parameters; a detailed functional comparison of the modules can be found in the article on logging into monitoring.

Module Radio Server port Network configuration mode Alternative route when to choose
ShineWiFi-X 802.11 b/g/n, 2,4–2,5 GHz, +20 dBm 5279 / 5280 standard or hotspot AP none - WiFi only stable 2,4 GHz WiFi with USB inverter
ShineWiFi-S 2,4 GHz WiFi 5279 / 5280 common procedure with version X none - WiFi only inverters with RS232 connector
ShineWiLan-X2 2,4 GHz WiFi 7006 Bluetooth from the app LAN cable, DHCP or static IP weak WiFi or corporate network with cables
Shine4G-X without WiFi - LTE-FDD/TDD, WCDMA, GSM —* from the application level SIM card, 2G/3G/4G networks objects without a router and without a permanent connection

* Catalog card Shine4G-X does not provide a port number - the transmission goes through the operator's mobile network, outside the facility's firewall.

Why Growatt WiFi keeps disconnecting? Diagnostics by LED

The datalogger's LED indicates where the inverter-router-server chain is interrupted, so network diagnostics always begin with color. The target state is a flashing blue LED—the module is connected to the inverter, router, and server.

A solid green light means the module isn't connecting to the router. The order of checks depends on the network requirements: correct name and password entered during configuration, 2,4 GHz band, SSID characters, encryption, and no second authentication. In practice, on dual-band routers with a single name for both bands, the phone can configure the module "over" 5 GHz—separating the bands into separate SSIDs usually solves the problem.

Flashing green — the module is in the router's network, but it does not reach the server: check if the router has internet access and if the firewall is not blocking port 5279 or 5280. If the green flashing lasts longer than 3 minutes after the configuration is completed, the instructions tell you to focus on the internet and ports. ShineWiLan-X2 the equivalent is blocking port 7006.

When connected via cable ShineWiLan-X2 A solid green light has three typical causes: an unplugged Ethernet cable, disabled DHCP on the router, or—in the case of static addressing—an IP segment mismatch with the router settings. After the first connection, this module also glows white for about a minute during initialization—this is not an error, just a startup. A full table of all LED states, along with installation procedures, is included in the article on logging in; here, just remember the rule: solid green = local network, flashing green = internet or ports.

Jak Growatt WiFi transmits data and what happens when the connection is interrupted?

The data path has two independent sections. The module communicates with the inverter via USB using the Modbus RTU protocol, and with the server via TCP using the Modbus TCP protocol. A measurement packet is sent every 5 minutes – therefore, the values in the application do not change in real time, and therefore momentary link fluctuations are invisible to the user.

For longer breaks, the manufacturer has provided a retransmission mechanism: ShineWiFi-X supports local data storage and resuming transmission from the interruption point. In practice, this means that a multi-hour internet outage doesn't leave a gap in the graphs—the module will send the outstanding measurements once the connection is restored. The mobile version goes a step further: ShineThe 4G-X caches up to a month of data in memory. Growatt WiFi forgives interruptions, but it does not forgive incorrect configuration, because without a connection to the server, retransmission will never start.

Module operating conditions - power supply and environment

The module does not have its own power supply: it draws 5V at 1A directly from the inverter's USB port and can only be powered from there—connecting it to other USB ports or adapters is prohibited. The IP65 housing withstands the conditions near the inverter, and the operating temperature range of -20 to +65°C, humidity 5-95% RH, and altitudes up to 3000 m above sea level covers virtually any installation location in Poland.

Growatt The WiFi version X measures 122/47/32 mm – this is the amount of space required under the inverter's USB port. Two safety precautions from the manual: do not connect a datalogger if the inverter is displaying a low insulation resistance alarm (possible ground fault to the housing), and do not attempt to repair or modify the module yourself.

Ports and Firewalls - What to Unblock on Your Corporate Network

In homes, ports are rarely a problem; in companies, they are a regular occurrence. ShineWiFi-X/S communicates with the server on ports 5279 and 5280, ShineWiLan-X2 on port 7006. The traffic is outgoing, via TCP (Modbus TCP), and the destination is the monitoring server - server address.growatt.com. Therefore, the network administrator only needs a rule to allow outgoing connections to these ports; incoming redirects are not needed.

Growatt WiFi doesn't support browser-based authentication, which effectively rules out corporate guest networks. If your security policy doesn't allow you to connect your data logger to your production network, there are two options: a dedicated 2,4 GHz network for IoT devices or bypassing the client infrastructure with a cellular module. Shine4G-X with standard SIM card.

Growatt WiFi in three types of facilities

In a single-family home, band and range are key factors in determining success. The router is usually located far from the inverter, and the 2,4 GHz network can be hidden under the same SSID as the 5 GHz network. Therefore, the first step is to test the range with your phone at the inverter and, if necessary, separate the bands. Growatt WiFi version X is sufficient in most homes; in places where the signal barely reaches, plan from the beginning ShineWiLan-X2 with a cable instead of hoping for a miracle.

In a company, network policy, not physics, is the obstacle. A captive portal in the guest network excludes the module, and the firewall blocks ports 5279/5280 and 7006. The standard solution is a dedicated network for IoT devices with an outbound rule—see the ports section for details. Static addressing ShineWiLan-X2 fits into the conventions of managed networks.

On a site without permanent internet — pumping station, shelter, construction site — Growatt There's no need to search for WiFi: the hotspot on the installer's phone disappears along with it. The actual module is Shine4G-X with a standard SIM card and up to a month of data buffer; the only decision is which operator has coverage at that location.

What NOT to do when setting up Growatt WiFi

  • Do not configure the module on a 5 GHz network or on a network with a common SSID for both bands without checking which band the module sees - only 2,4 GHz is supported.
  • Do not leave characters outside the allowed set in the SSID and password (﹉… €¥ and similar symbols prevent connection).
  • Do not connect the datalogger to a network with a captive portal - second authentication is not supported.
  • Do not use an unencrypted network - the manufacturer requires encryption for security reasons.
  • Do not reconfigure the module after changing the router without first performing a factory reset (6 seconds, three LED colors).
  • Do not change parameters in "Advanced settings" ShineWiLan-X2 no need - these are settings for professionals; incorrect configuration disables the module.

When WiFi is a Bad Choice - LAN and Cellular

The WiFi signal at the inverter can be the weakest link in the entire monitoring system – inverters hang in garages, basements and near distribution boards, which is exactly where the range of the home router ends. ShineWiLan-X2 solves this with a cable: when selecting "LAN Connection", the datalogger is added without configuring the wireless network, by default it takes the address from DHCP, and in managed networks allows you to set a static IP, gateway, mask and DNS after disabling DHCP.

Where there is no internet at all, it works Shine4G-X: standard SIM card, 2G/3G/4G networks in the LTE-FDD B1/B3/B5/B7/B8/B20 and LTE-TDD B38/B40/B41 bands. The module has built-in memory for up to a month of data, so coverage outages don't mean a gap in your data history. The transmission interval is the same as the WiFi versions—5 minutes—and data usage with such infrequent, small packets falls within the cheapest M2M plans.

Reset and service modes - pulls on the ladder

Three button operations take care of all servicing ShineWiFi-X/S: A short press puts the module into AP mode (the LED changes from flashing to steady), pressing it again exits the mode, and holding it for 6 seconds—until the LED lights red, green, and blue simultaneously—restores factory settings. After the reset, wait until the LED slowly flashes red before starting network configuration.

W ShineWiLan-X2 A short press turns Bluetooth mode on and off, and a 6-second hold until the white LED lights up resets it—with an important caveat: the router's data and transmission interval are deleted, but the serial number, server domain, IP address, and port remain. Therefore, a reset doesn't "disconnect" the module from your account or corrupt its identity—it only deletes the network configuration, which you'll then re-enter anyway.

From the installer's practice

Four networking habits from real-world deployments – practical tips, not manufacturer requirements.

  • In practice: before installation, stand with your phone next to the inverter and check the network list – if your phone sees your home network poorly or not at all, the WiFi module will see it less clearly. This is the 30 seconds that will decide the choice between ShineWiFi and ShineWiLan.
  • From practice: after each change in the Internet provider (a new router from the operator), warn the client that monitoring requires reconfiguration of the datalogger - resetting takes 6 seconds and reconfiguration takes two minutes, but the client must know that this is normal and not a failure.
  • From practice: in corporate networks, send one line to the administrator before installation: "IoT device, outgoing TCP traffic to ports 5279/5280 (or 7006), target server.growatt.com, 2,4 GHz without captive portal." This saves weeks of correspondence.
  • From practice: the hotspot password 12345678 is default and publicly known - enable hotspot mode only for the duration of configuration and exit it with the button, instead of leaving the module in service mode.
  • From practice: with static addressing ShineWiLan-X2 write down the assigned IP, gateway and mask in the installation documentation - after two years no one remembers them, and without them the "green constant" diagnostics in the company network starts from scratch.

FAQ - Frequently asked questions about Growatt WiFi

My router is only broadcasting 5 GHz. What should I do?

The modules only support 2,4 GHz, so it is necessary to enable the 2,4 GHz band in the router (most dual-band routers have it available, sometimes disabled or hidden under a common SSID). The hardware alternative is ShineWiLan-X2 via LAN cable.

I changed my WiFi password and the installation disappeared from the app. Is my data lost?

The installation doesn't disappear from your account—the module simply stopped reporting. Perform a factory reset (press and hold the button for more than 6 seconds until the LED flashes three colors), wait for the slow red flashing, and configure the network again. Reset ShineWiLan-X2 keeps the serial number, server domain, IP and port - only deletes the router data and transmission interval.

How far from the router can a datalogger hang?

The instructions do not specify the range in meters – and rightly so, because wall attenuation is more important than distance. Growatt WiFi transmits at up to +20 dBm in 2,4 GHz, just like a typical phone; the practical test in the previous section (phone next to an inverter) is a better measure than any table.

Czy Growatt Will WiFi work through a repeater or mesh?

The instructions don't describe operation through signal boosters—this isn't mentioned in the source documents. In practice, a mesh node or repeater broadcasting a regular, encrypted 2,4 GHz network is indistinguishable from a router to the module, so configuration proceeds normally. Just remember that each additional radio link represents an additional point of failure for monitoring, and networks requiring website login are excluded.

Does the WiFi problem affect the inverter operation and yields?

No—the datalogger is for monitoring and remote maintenance purposes only. The inverter produces regardless of whether the module is reporting; a communication interruption means a data gap and no remote viewing, not a loss of energy.

Network checklist before leaving the facility

  1. 2,4 GHz network active and visible at the inverter.
  2. SSID and password without forbidden characters.
  3. Encrypted network (WPA/WPA2), no captive portal.
  4. Outgoing ports clear: 5279/5280 or 7006.
  5. After configuration, the LED flashes blue for more than 3 minutes.
  6. The module is not in hotspot/Bluetooth mode (the LED is not constantly blue).
  7. For LAN: cable connected, DHCP enabled or static IP consistent with the segment.
  8. Client warned: router change = module reconfiguration.
  9. Network data (SSID, possible static IP, ports used) recorded in the installation acceptance protocol.
  10. Control test performed after full transmission interval: fresh data sample visible in the app before leaving the facility.

If the network on site does not meet the requirements, the hardware solution is Growatt ShineWiLan-X2 with LAN or cellular port GROWATT Shine GPRS-4G-X; the full range of modules can be found in the category Accessories. Current configuration guides are published download center Growatt.
