How a hybrid inverter works - operating scheme, modes and backup power
The hybrid inverter converts power from the panels into electricity for the home, charges and discharges the energy storage, and decides whether the surplus goes to the battery or the grid. Selected series power the home from the storage during a grid failure—from a built-in output, through a separate box, or as a UPS. You select the storage for the inverter based on its voltage class: low voltage (LV) or high voltage (HV).
How does a hybrid inverter work? It combines three devices in one housing: grid inverter, which converts direct current from the panels into 230/400 V alternating current for the home, battery charger with a separate entrance to the energy storage and Energy Flow Controller (EMS), which constantly decides where the power flows—to the home, to the warehouse, or to the grid. Selected series also power the home from the warehouse during a grid outage. Examples are provided using inverters. How Energy Flows: 5 Steps a Day
This is what a day looks like for a house with photovoltaics, a hybrid inverter and energy storage in home priority mode - in inverters MIN-XH this is the factory setting:
- Panels → house. The electricity from the panels first covers the current consumption in the home.
- Surplus → warehouse. When the panels produce more than the house uses, the surplus goes to storage instead of to the grid.
- Rest → network. Energy that the house no longer uses and the storage facility no longer accepts goes into the grid – unless the installer has set a limit on energy output.
- Evening and night: warehouse → home. When the panels are not working, the house draws electricity first from the storage and only then from the grid.
- Network failure. An inverter with a backup function switches to powering the house from the storage system. If this function is not present or is disabled, the inverter turns off the output in the event of a grid failure.

What does a hybrid inverter consist of?
Each part of the hybrid inverter is responsible for a different section of the current path:
- Converting electricity from panels. The grid section converts direct current (DC) from the panels to 230/400V alternating current (AC) and delivers it to the home's electrical system and the grid. Trackers collect the power from the panels. MPPT — systems that continuously adjust the operation of the panels so that they deliver the maximum power; MOD 10KTL3-HU has three of them.
- Battery charging and discharging. Separate DC input charges and discharges energy storage - as per card MOD 10KTL3-HU charging power up to 15 kW and discharging power up to 10 kW. The inverter works with the battery cell management system (BMS).
- Energy flow control (EMS). The controller decides when to charge the battery, when to discharge it, and whether the surplus energy is fed into the grid. It receives its readings from an energy meter installed between the inverter and the house and the grid—in MIN-XH the same meter is used to limit the energy fed into the grid.
- Emergency exit — in series that have them. In the event of a grid failure, it supplies power to the house or separate circuits from the storage unit.
Work priorities: home, warehouse or network
The sequence of steps 1-4 is just one mode. Inverter Manual MIN-XH lists three battery operating modes and allows you to assign each to a specific hour range – e.g. one during the day, one at night:
- Load First — Home priority; factory setting.
- Battery First — priority for loading the warehouse.
- Grid First — priority for feeding energy into the grid.
Charging the warehouse with electricity from the grid is MIN-XH separate function, factory-disabled; modes are set by the installer on the inverter display. Mode details WIT, including the tariff schedule (TOU) - in the article operating modes Growatt WITThe energy release limit is described in the article export limit and counter Growatt.

Power supply in case of mains failure: built-in, via box or UPS function
Not every hybrid inverter powers a home in the same way during a grid failure. Growatt there are three solutions: an emergency exit built into the inverter, a separate box (SYN) or UPS function.
| Door Line | Working during a network failure | Switching time by card | What else do you need? |
|---|---|---|---|
| MOD-HU | built into the inverter, without a box; power up to the rated power of the inverter if the battery supplies it | the MOD-HU card does not provide a switching time* | battery APX HV 2.0 |
| WIT-HU | built-in emergency output; rated power, momentarily 2 × power for 10 s | 10 ms (4–15 kW), less than 10 ms (17–25 kW) | battery ALP 5.0L, HOPE 5.0L-B1 or HOPE 16.0LM-A1 |
| SPH TL3 BH-UP | UPS function | less than 10 ms | battery ARK 2.5H-A2 with module BMS HVC 60050-C2 |
| MIN-XH | through the mailbox SYN 50-XH-10, only with battery APX; box for 6 kW | box: less than 500 ms | box SYN 50-XH-10 and battery APX HV 2.0 |
| MID-XH | through the mailbox | —* | box EU SYN-100-XH-30 and battery APX HV 2.0 |
According to the catalog cards Growatt (MOD-HU, WIT-HU, SPH TL3 BH-UP, SYN 50-XH-10) and manufacturer's compliance list. * MOD 3000–9000TL3-HU and MOD 10–15KTL3-HU (rev. 2025-11) cards do not have a switching time field; for the EU box SYN-100-XH-30 to MID-XH the documents we use do not specify it.
The transfer time is the power interruption between the mains failure and operation from storage. "UPS Function" is the manufacturer's designation from the card SPH TL3 BH-UP — an abbreviation known from uninterruptible power supplies for computers; the card specifies a switching time of less than 10 ms. For other series, the manufacturer writes about an emergency output (backup) — WIT-HU It also switches in 10 ms, but the card doesn't call it a UPS function.
Power in the event of a failure is limited by the inverter and battery: MOD 10KTL3-HU delivers up to 10 kW in emergency mode, but the warehouse APX 10 kWh gives up to 5 kW, APX 15 kWh up to 7,5 kW, and APX 20 kWh up to 10 kW. How long the house runs from storage is calculated in the guide how long will the energy storage last 10 kWhWhich house circuits the inverter powers in the event of a power outage is determined by the design of the installation company.

LV or HV battery: how to choose a storage system for a hybrid inverter
A hybrid inverter works with a battery at a specific voltage, and this determines which storage device you can connect. Therefore, the storage device is matched to the inverter, not the other way around: high-voltage (HV) batteries work with HV inverters, and low-voltage (LV) batteries work with LV inverters.
- Low Voltage (LV): WIT-HU works with a 40-60 V battery, nominal 51,2 V. The offer fits ALP 5.0L, HOPE 5.0L-B1 i HOPE 16.0LM-A1.
- High Voltage (HV): MOD-HU i MID-XH they work with a 600-980 V battery - these are warehouses APX HV 2.0. SPH TL3 BH-UP works with 100-550V battery - ARK 2.5H-A2 with module BMS HVC 60050-C2. Single phase MIN-XH also cooperates with the magazine APX HV 2.0.
You increase capacity with modules. APX HV 2.0 has 5 to 30 kWh on one master module - this is the main module with a built-in battery management system (BMS); z MID-XH to 60 kWh on two master modules. ALP 5.0L grows after 5 kWh. You can find ready-made pairs on the website energy storage with inverterWe only select batteries from the compatibility list. Growatt.
Single-phase or three-phase hybrid inverter
The number of phases is determined by the house connection. A three-phase inverter requires a three-phase connection; a single-phase inverter is used on a single-phase connection. In series Growatt single-phase is MIN-XH (2,5–6 kW), and three-phase ones are MOD-HU (3–15 kW), WIT-HU (4–25 kW), SPH TL3 BH-UP (4–10 kW) of the MID-XH (17–30 kW).
With three phases, check how the inverter handles uneven phase loads – in your home, some loads operate on only one phase. "100% unbalance" in the data sheet means the inverter can load the phases completely unevenly: WIT-HU 4–15 kW has 100% unbalance and each phase can deliver up to 50% of the rated power; SPH TL3 BH-UP also gives 100% asymmetry. MOD-HU gives the peak power on one phase for the emergency output, e.g. 3,33 kVA for MOD 10KTL3-HU (kVA is the apparent power - this is how the cards indicate the output power). More about the selection in the article which 3-phase hybrid inverter to choose.

Hybrid Inverter Questions and Answers
What distinguishes a hybrid inverter from a grid-tied inverter (on-grid)?
The grid-tie inverter converts the power from the panels into electricity for the home and feeds the surplus back into the grid. However, it doesn't have a battery input and won't power the home without the grid. The hybrid inverter also has an input for an energy storage device and controls its charging, and selected series power the home from the storage device in the event of a grid failure.
Is it possible to install a hybrid inverter without a battery?
Yes, if the manufacturer has anticipated this. Catalog cards Growatt describe the series MOD-HU i MID-XH as battery-ready: you start with just the panels, then add the storage later. Energy storage and grid failure support only work with the battery.
How does a hybrid inverter work during a power outage?
It depends on the series. MOD-HU has a built-in emergency exit, WIT-HU switches to storage power in 10 ms (4–15 kW models), SPH TL3 BH-UP has a UPS function, and MIN-XH i MID-XH they need a separate box SYNEnergy storage is needed, and the power output in the event of a power outage is limited by the inverter and battery.
Can a hybrid inverter be placed where there is no connection?
Series MOD-HU i WIT-HU are designed for installations connected to the grid; in the event of a grid failure, they supply power to the house from the storage. Where there is no connection, inverter off-grid, e.g. Growatt SPF 6000ES Plus with 48V battery
Does the hybrid inverter charge the storage with electricity from the grid?
Maybe if the installer enables this feature. In inverters MIN-XH Charging the battery from the mains is a separate setting, disabled by default. Mode details WIT, including the tariff schedule (TOU), we describe in the article operating modes Growatt WIT.
Which energy storage device fits a hybrid inverter?
One that is on the inverter compatibility list - the voltage class (LV or HV) must match. Growatt MOD-HU, MIN-XH i MID-XH cooperate with the warehouse APX HV 2.0, SPH TL3 BH-UP with battery ARK 2.5H-A2, WIT-HU with batteries ALP 5.0L, HOPE 5.0L-B1 i HOPE 16.0LM-A1.
1-phase or 3-phase hybrid inverter – which one to choose?
The type of connection you have: three-phase requires a three-phase connection, single-phase requires e.g. Growatt MIN-XH (2,5–6 kW). Three-phase series Growatt to MOD-HU (3–15 kW), WIT-HU (4–25 kW), SPH TL3 BH-UP (4–10 kW) and MID-XH (17–30 kW).
What does Load First mode mean in a hybrid inverter?
This is the home priority mode in inverters MIN-XH The factory setting is: the electricity from the panels first powers the house, the surplus charges the storage, and in the evening, the house uses the storage first, then the grid. Other modes include Battery First (prioritizing storage charging) and Grid First (prioritizing energy output to the grid).
