Surface-mounted, hermetic distribution board IP65, 12 modules
A hermetic IP65 surface-mount distribution board for twelve standard-width modules, designed for wall mounting. Suitable for outdoor use and in damp rooms, this enclosure houses a complete set of photovoltaic system safety devices: a disconnect switch, surge arresters, overcurrent protection, and differential circuit breakers.
The most important features
- Twelve modular spaces - space for a complete set of security measures for a small installation
- IP65 protection class: dustproof and resistant to water jets from any direction
- Surface mounting, no need to forge into the recess
- 35mm DIN rail - standard mounting for modular devices
Surface-mounted IP65 distribution board - what to pay attention to
An IP65 protection rating means the enclosure is dustproof and resistant to water jets from any direction. In practice, this is the minimum for switchboards mounted on a façade, under a carport, in an unheated garage, or in a boiler room. Lower-class enclosures, typically found in residential interiors, tend to collect moisture in such locations, and condensation on the terminals can lead to contact corrosion.
Twelve module slots are large enough to accommodate the complete safety equipment for a small photovoltaic installation: a switch disconnector, a set of surge arresters, an inverter circuit breaker, and a differential circuit breaker. When planning, it's worth leaving two slots free—for later addition of a car charger circuit or a second module string. Adding a device to a full distribution board usually results in replacing the entire enclosure.
The devices are mounted on a 35 mm DIN rail, the standard used by virtually all modular equipment. In a hermetic switchboard, it's also crucial to maintain tightness when entering cables: cable glands are selected for the cable diameter, and unused holes are plugged. A switchboard with an open, unplugged bushing loses its declared protection class, regardless of the markings on the enclosure.
The photovoltaic distribution board is designed separately from the home distribution board, even if both are located next to each other. The reason is practical: the inverter circuit can be shut down during rooftop maintenance, leaving the rest of the installation to continue operating. A separate enclosure also simplifies commissioning, as all the photovoltaic protection devices are in one place and clearly labeled.
When installing outdoors, it's important to remember two things that are easy to forget when ordering the enclosure itself. The first is shade: the switchboard can become very hot in full sun, and modular equipment has a specific upper operating temperature range. The second is to enter the cables from the bottom, not the top – this prevents water running down the cable from entering the enclosure.
Selecting devices for an enclosure begins with counting the locations, but ends with checking for easy wiring. Surge arresters require short, simple connections to the ground busbar, while differential circuit breakers have terminals with limited capacity. With twelve locations, it's worth drawing up the distribution board before purchasing the devices, as moving a pre-assembled system to a larger enclosure effectively means rewiring. The distribution board should also be labeled: a diagram and description of the circuits inside are required upon acceptance, and can save hours of work during service years later.
