Growatt APX 5.0M-B3 – energy storage master module APX 2.0

Growatt APX 5.0M-B3 is the master module of the high-voltage energy storage Growatt APX HV Battery 2.0 (system designation APX 5.0-30.0M-S3). Combines 5 in one housing kWh usable capacity and all the electronics that control the system: battery management system, DC disconnect switch, start button, communication port to the inverter, and USB port for software updates. This is the only element of the system APX 2.0, which cannot be skipped - every installation starts with one module APX 5.0M-B3, and only then the battery modules are added to it APX 5.0P-B3. The base of the system is included — the manufacturer ships the master module factory-assembled with the base, so it takes 5 minutes to run the warehouse kWh you don't need to buy a frame or a separate box BMS.

In practice, this means a simple selection rule: one master per battery column, from zero to five expansion modules next to it. The master module itself works as a complete warehouse 5 kWh — installation does not require any additional driver or separate box BMS, as it was in the previous generation APX. Growatt APX 5.0M-B3 It supports both single-phase and three-phase inverters, so the same energy storage unit is suitable for a single-phase home installation and a three-phase hybrid in a small business.

Expert opinion

The biggest change in the second generation APX It's not the cells, but what's missing from the shopping list. In the B1 generation, you had to buy a separate control module for the set. BMS and a set of cascade cables - three items in the order instead of one and three places where the installer could have made a mistake. APX 2.0 electronics are located in the master module APX 5.0M-B3, and the modules are connected by contacts via latches, without any wiring between the modules.

Another thing we pay attention to when pricing: one master unit handles both single-phase and three-phase installations. Until recently, selecting a storage unit began with the question "how many phases," as this determined the battery catalog number. Here, the difference comes down to the operating parameters, not another product—a storage unit purchased for a single-phase home won't become unusable after upgrading to a three-phase system.

What we don't promise, because it's not in the July 2026 datasheet: the manufacturer doesn't provide a depth of discharge (DOD), round-trip efficiency, or declared cycle count for this family. If these three numbers are a significant factor for you, contact us—we'll request them from the manufacturer instead of reproducing values from the previous generation.

This isn't something we've gleaned from the documentation, but rather something we've verified on the hardware: the latches connecting the modules close without tools, and the column assembly itself is quick and intuitive. The data sheet doesn't describe either of these—we're providing this as our own observations from assembly, not as a manufacturer's declaration.

Who is it for? Growatt APX 5.0M-B3

  • Home installation starting from 5 kWh — the master module itself is a complete energy storage unit and can be expanded later without replacing anything.
  • Expansion of the installation by additional kilowatt-hours — you add from one to five modules to one master Growatt APX 5.0P-B3, getting 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 kWh.
  • Single-phase and three-phase installations — the same module supports both systems, so the wholesaler and installer keep one index in stock instead of two.
  • Corporate facilities with greater demand — cascade to three systems APX M-S3 allows you to go from one column to many and achieve capacities of several dozen kilowatt-hours.
  • Installations in more difficult conditions — IP66 housing, natural cooling and heating foil extend the operating range to −20°C…+55°C.

The most important features Growatt APX 5.0M-B3

  • Integrated control — Master module contains battery management system, DC disconnect switch, and start button. Separate box BMS is not needed.
  • Phase universality — max. output power 10 kW in single-phase and 15 kW in three-phase (values for the entire system, limited by the inverter and battery capacity).
  • Cobalt-free LFP cells — lithium-iron-phosphate chemistry, copied from the catalog card as Cobalt Free Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP).
  • Installation without wiring between modules — joint construction; subsequent modules are placed on top of each other and screwed together on the sides.
  • Mixing new and older modules within one system - manufacturer's declaration from the catalog card APX HV Battery 2.0. The card does not specify how far back this compatibility extends, so before upgrading, please check the nameplates of the installed modules.
  • Module-level optimization — each module operates at its own state of charge, instead of equalizing the entire string to the weakest link.
  • Firmware update from a pendrive — the master module has a USB port for uploading new software.
  • Monitoring state of charge (SOC), system voltage, current, cell voltage, cell temperature and electronics temperature.
  • Hibernation mode with wake-up button - hold for more than 5 seconds.
  • 10 years warranty manufacturer and European service warranty PVGroup.pl.

How many modules do you need - capacity selection

The system is built from one master module Growatt APX 5.0M-B3 and from zero to five battery modules Growatt APX 5.0P-B3 in one column. The table below shows configurations straight from the catalog card—power is given separately for single-phase and three-phase installations, because at larger capacities, these two systems diverge.

System configurations APX 5.0-30.0M-S3
System Configuration Capacity Max 1-phase power Max 3-phase power Dimensions (W×H×D) System weight
APX 5.0M-S3 1 × 5.0M-B3 5 kWh 2,5 kW 2,5 kW 590 × 425 × 255 mm 53,2 kg
APX 10.0M-S3 1 × master + 1 × module 10 kWh 5 kW 5 kW 590 × 690 × 255 mm 98,2 kg
APX 15.0M-S3 1 × master + 2 × module 15 kWh 7,5 kW 7,5 kW 590 × 955 × 255 mm 143,2 kg
APX 20.0M-S3 1 × master + 3 × module 20 kWh 10 kW 10 kW 590 × 1220 × 255 mm 188,2 kg
APX 25.0M-S3 1 × master + 4 × module 25 kWh 10 kW 12,5 kW 590 × 1485 × 255 mm 233,2 kg
APX 30.0M-S3 1 × master + 5 × modules 30 kWh 10 kW 15 kW 590 × 1750 × 255 mm 278,2 kg

The peak power (10 s) is 3,5 / 7 / 10,5 / 14 / 14 / 21 kW for three-phase and 3,5 / 7 / 10,5 / 14 / 14 / 14 kW for single-phase, respectively. The power of the entire system is limited by the maximum charge and discharge power of the inverter and the battery capacity.

A practical tip for selecting a solar panel: power increases with capacity , 2,5 kW per module, up to the ceiling set by the master electronics (10 kW for single-phase, 15 kW for three-phase). If you need high-power backup power rather than a large energy reserve, you'll still need to add battery modules: a master plus one module gives 5 kW, a master plus three modules gives 10 kW. However, if evening energy reserves are the only consideration, capacity is selected based on daily consumption, not inverter power.

You need more than 30 kWh? The system supports cascade to three systems APX M-S3, which communicate with each other via the CAN bus. Each column then has its own master module. Pressing the start button on any of them triggers the entire cascade.

Compatible inverters and accessories

Installation Guide APX 2.0 explicitly mentions three families of inverters Growatt cooperating with the system APX 5.0-30.0M-S3:

  • Growatt MOD 3-15KTL3-HU — three-phase hybrid inverters, from 3 to 15 kW (the offer includes, among others, MOD 3000TL3-HU, MOD 10KTL3-HU, MOD 15KTL3-HU).
  • Growatt MID 29.9-50K-HU — three-phase hybrids of higher power, for corporate applications (MID 50K-HU).
  • Growatt MIN-XH2 (version with RJ45 port) — single-phase hybrid inverters. With a single-phase inverter, the connector socket is sealed with a dust cap, and an N cable extension is not required.

Communication with the inverter is via the RS485 or CAN bus . Pins 1–2 of the communication port handle the battery wake-up signal, pins 3–6 handle the CAN bus between the battery and the inverter, and pins 7–8 handle the RS485 bus. For the definition of the port on the inverter side, refer to the specific model's manual.

Optional accessories, purchased separately: wall mount, N cable extension and cascade communication cable APX M-S3 — the latter is only needed when you connect two or three systems in a cascade.

Note when ordering: modules APX 5.0P-B3 i APX 5.0M-B3 to separate items. Battery module APX 5.0P-B3 does not work independently - without a master there is no control, disconnector, or communication with the inverter. If you are building a warehouse from scratch, there must be exactly one in the basket APX 5.0M-B3 — capacity over the first 5 kWh you add modules Growatt APX 5.0P-B3.

Certificates and standards

The catalog card lists the following standards and certificates for the system APX 5.0-30.0M-S3: IEC62619 (cell and pack), IEC60730, IEC62477-1, IEC62040-1, CE (EN61000), UN38.3, IEC60529, REACH, and CEC. The list is copied from the manufacturer's document without any additions - if you require a specific certificate in document form for a tender, we will send the file upon request.

Installation and operation

Growatt APX 5.0M-B3 is being assembled on the wall or on the floorIn both variants, a single column can accommodate a maximum of six modules: a master module plus five battery modules. The master module sits at the very top of the column; in floor mounting, the master module is factory-assembled to the base, so the base must be removed before adding battery modules.

Location requirements from the manufacturer's instructions:

  • Service clearances: at least 300 mm on the sides and at least 150 mm in other directions.
  • Wall mounting height: 300 to 1500 mm.
  • The battery should be installed below the inverter or at its air inlet. Installation at the inverter's air outlet is prohibited - it may limit the storage's power.
  • Outdoor installation requires a roof to protect against direct sun and rain, despite the IP66 rating.
  • Environmental conditions: from −20°C to +55°C, relative humidity 5–95%, altitude up to 4000 m above sea level
  • Tightening torques: M4 screws - 1 N m, M6 - 2 N m.

Manufacturer recommends against installing a DC disconnector between the battery and the inverterIf required by facility regulations, the rated current must exceed 40 A, and the disconnect switch must never be operated with power applied. Before servicing, disconnect the AC circuit breaker, the inverter DC disconnect switch, and the module DC disconnect switch. APX 5.0M-B3, then waits two minutes.

You can monitor the current operation of the warehouse through the inverter to which it is connected - application ShinePhone and the portal ShineServer They show the charge status, charge and discharge power, and operation history. The master module itself reports a complete set of diagnostic parameters to the inverter: SOC, system voltage, current, cell voltage and temperature, and the temperature of its own electronics.

Economics of energy storage in a Polish installation

Under the net-billing system in force in Poland, energy fed into the grid is billed at market price, while energy consumed is billed at the retailer's selling price, including distribution fees. The difference between the two is the amount of energy the energy storage facility allows you to keep. Growatt APX 5.0M-B3 with a capacity of 5 kWh covers typical evening household consumption; adding modules pushes the auto-consumption limit higher and allows the heat pump or car charging to be shifted to the night.

The second reason for purchase, increasingly cited by installers, is emergency power . Here, it's not the capacity itself that matters, but the power—which increases with the number of modules, at 2,5 kW per module. It's worth calculating the specific backup scenario for the facility before purchasing; we can do this upon request based on a customer list.
